2008 Election Results

I was not surprised that Barack Obama won, but I was a bit surprised by the margin. I thought he would win the popular vote by more than 53% to 46%. Although I did not vote for him, I am not disappointed that he won. The final nail in the coffin of racism.
The big news here was that the 3 incumbents kept their seats on the Encinitas city council. I was quite alarmed to see Maggie Houlihan get the most votes with 10,245, almost 2,000 more than second place finisher Jerome Stocks. James Bond rounded out the show with 7,981 votes. Bond's decision to reenter the race was probably for naught as Doug Long finished fourth and would have kept the status quo on the council if Bond was not running. Collier was fifth and Bob Nanninga finished a disappointing sixth. Brandenburg, Sheffo and Seldon were the also-rans. 1,928 idiots voted for Betsy Aceti. So the council remains unchanged until Barth and Dalager come up for election.
The sand tax passed by a huge margin. You have to love taxation without representation.
Of the state propositions I cared about, they all went against me. The 1A rail money pit passed. The state also decided to elect a black man president but tell gays they aren't welcome...in the very same election. Nice.
Sidebar: Did anyone notice the NC Times and UT sites were butt slow yesterday? Slow web sites that can't handle traffic spikes are so 90's. Get with it guys.

Althought it is disheartening that Team Nanninga failed in our attempt to bring unwavering environmental stewardship to the Encinitas City Council in 2008, the Nanninga for Encinitas campaign will not be discouraged or distracted from winning a seat on the Encinitas City Council. With vision and purpose I will continue to serve the residents of Encinitas as an environmental activist and community advocate, and ask others to do the same.

That said, I encourage all who voted for me to keep the faith and start talking to your friends and neighbors with the goal of enrolling them in the Nanninga 2010campaign.
Over the next few weeks we will assess the outcome of the 2008 election precinct by precinct. Once that data is in Team Nanninga will devise a winning strategy, bringing together a progressive coalition to challenge the entrenched status quo.

Four more years of heavy development.
More traffic, more dense buildings. Four more years. New Encinitas is next. It ain't going to be pleasant for the area. If you voted for the incumbents, sell your house now while you can. The values will drop even more.

The election results in Encinitas were not entirely unanticipated by those who were close political observers.
The fact of the matter is that Encinitas is a well run, well managed, and well led City. And as we read daily about various cities, the state, and our nation being swamped by deficits, we in Encinitas are in pretty good shape as a result of prudent policy and decision making, along with some good fortune. In fact, Encinitas has more money I our rainy day funds than ever in our city’s history, we have a balanced budget, and we’re getting important projects completed.

A wise coffee vendor in Cardiff summed it up best for me when she said that she liked our current council, and wanted it to stay the same. She said she feels that way because while we have a common-sense majority basically having the final word, there’s the “other approach” represented as well. And although she doesn’t want the alternative voice to go away, she doesn’t want it to be the majority voice either.

She pointed out that the City of Encinitas is an eclectic city with an attitudinal composition ranging from CEO’s and professionals to aging hippies and baby-boom surfers sharing the waves with tomorrow’s generation of leaders. If we’re not California’s per capita leader in yoga studios she couldn’t imagine who is!

I think that line of reasoning may help explain why the voters rejected all the challengers; even in this year of change, and instead returned the proven leaders of a reasoned and balanced Council which has served our city so well these past six years.

I look forward to helping our City navigate the waters as we make our way through these financially troubled times, and am truly honored to have been given this vote of confidence by the citizens of our wonderful city.

Did the coffee cart worker know about:

1) your leadership on SANDAG and TransNet's projected 3 billion dollar deficit?
2) Your approval of a $20 million credit card bill using lease revenue bonds
3) Luxury pension and raises for staff while us working folk see our real wages and benefits evaporate
4) your great stewardship in ignoring the public's concern when giving away millions of dollars for a turkey public works yard?
5) your continual backroom dealing with developers at the expense of residents?

I'll bet she knows nothing about this stuff, so I have a different view of the election.

My view is that you were given a "report card" by voters who never reviewed your work.

My detailed response to "to jerome" has been removed. Needless to say, I believe "to Jerome" has issues not related to the reality that everyday folks can relate to, and as a result has arrived at very perverse conclusions and opinions.
